Welcome Message
The Emirates Osteoporosis Society is pleased to
welcome you all to the 1st Emirates Osteoporosis
Conference (March 2-4, 2008) in Dubai, United
Arab Emirates.
As you are aware, osteoporosis is a growing
international health care problem. The
incidences of osteoporosis and its related
fractures are increasing at alarming rates
globally, particularly in the Arab countries.
Many health authorities in the world have set
strategies several years ago to deal with this
growing problem.
We have lagged behind for a few years. However,
with foundation of the Emirates Osteoporosis
Society on 2nd November 2006, we have, in
alliance with the Health Authorities of the UAE,
set in place, a strategy that is two-fold:
> To educate the public on the subject of
osteoporosis and how to prevent it
As an initial endeavour, we successfully
organised the global launch of World
Osteoporosis Day in Dubai on 20th October 2007,
which proved helpful in raising an awareness
about the disease and in spreading the message
across the country of the importance of, and the
means to “Beat the Break”.
> To re-emphasis to health care givers in the
country, the importance of screening for low
bone mass, common modifiable risk factors for
osteoporosis in the UAE, and the current
management of osteoporosis.
Emirates Osteoporosis Society has helped us to
achieve some of our goals. Nevertheless, hosting
the Pan Arab Osteoporosis Conference and having
the opportunity to meet a group of renowned
international scientists in the field of
osteoporosis, will further assist in broadening
the knowledge of practising physicians in the
UAE and other Arab countries.
We all looking forward to see you in Dubai soon.
I personally wish you a pleasant stay in Dubai
and I hope that you will enjoy the conference
sessions as you will definitely enjoy the city.
Dr. Jamal Ali Al Saleh
Head of Rheumatology, Dubai Hospital
President of the Emirates Osteoporosis Society
